One of the countries strongest Title IX advocates, former Olympic swimming champion Nancy Hogshead-Makar, has launched a non-profit organization called Champion Women. The mission of Champion Women is to use sport to improve the lives of girls and women. Equal opportunity in athletics for girls and women will be the organization’s primary focus.

“Our most powerful and influential athletic institutions are falling short in addressing critical gender equity issues,” said Hogshead-Makar.

“Champion Women will … target equality, accountability and transparency throughout sports culture. In addition, Champion Women will amplify the voices of girls and women who may not be able to speak for themselves.”

Hogshead-Makar is a civil rights attorney and prolific scholar. She’s recognized as one of the nation’s foremost experts on gender equity in sports. She was a long-time executive at the Women’s Sports Foundation.
