Major League Baseball umpire Dale Scott revealed he was gay this week. He is the first male sports official in the four major professional sports to do so.

Thanks to the courage of Jason Collins, Michael Sam and several other sports figures who previously came out as gay to the general public, the Scott news received very little attention.

And that’s good news for our society.

Scott said his sexuality wasn’t a surprise to some MLB umpires and executives. He’s been with his partner, Michael Rausch for 28 years.

“It’s not a shock to MLB management because they’re well-aware of my situation and it’s not a shock to the umpire staff,” said Scott, who also said widespread reaction to the news has been overwhelmingly positive.

Scott has been an MLB umpire since 1986 and has worked three World Series and three All-Star Games.
