The League of Fans recently sent a letter to NBA commissioner David Stern asking him to prevent the placement of corporate ads on NBA uniforms. We called it “crass commercialization at its worst, and a blatant back of the hand to the sensibilities of American basketball fans.”

Fans have an emotional bond to the iconic uniforms of franchises like the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers. To imagine a Burger King or Goldman Sachs ad next to the “Celtics” script on Boston’s green uniforms is distressing.

Our arenas are covered with corporate ads inside and out; timeouts and halftimes are non-stop commercials. Let’s at least save NBA basketball uniforms from NBA greed. Moreover, NFL, MLB, and NHL uniforms will probably follow with ad-covered uniforms of their own if the NBA goes forward with this idea.

If you’d like to join the fight to stop the NASCARization of NBA uniforms, sign the new petition here .
