Washington Post columnist Mike Wise had an interesting column yesterday.
In an interview with former NFL referee Mike Carey, Wise got Carey to say publicly for the first time that he had requested to not be assigned to any Washington Redskins games following the 2006 season.
Asked why he did it, Carey said, “Human beings take social stances. And if you’re respectful of all human beings, you have to decide what you’re going to do and why you’re going to do it.”
Later in the interview he said, “Everybody has to look inside themselves and decide what is the right thing for them.”
When asked about Washington owner Dan Snyder’s refusal to change a disrespectful team name, Carey said:
“Sometimes evolution is slow for some people. But where else in America do you see that, though, the refusal to change? From Stanford on down, most everybody has changed from a derogatory name to one that is acceptable.”
Kudos to Mr. Carey.
