A couple significant things happened in SportsWorld this week: MLB had an openly gay umpire on the field for the first time and the NFL hired a female official.

Of most significance, however, was the fact not much was made of either happening.

Dale Scott was the home plate umpire in the Milwaukee Brewers’ home opener against the Colorado Rockies. The occurrence was barely noted in either the traditional media or Twitterverse.

The NFL’s hiring of Sarah Thomas as the league’s first female official only drew slightly more attention.

The lack of noise these events created this week certainly doesn’t mean we’ve reached a point of true equal opportunity in sports in this country. But it’s at least a sign we’re moving in the right direction.
